Le livre pour enfants est vraiment un monde en soi. C’est un grand privilège de s’adresser à de si petits êtres humains, et une responsabilité énorme. Les enfants ne voient pas le monde comme nous, ils le définissent, l’inventent, le transcendent. Je crois qu’on peut dire beaucoup de choses aux enfants. Des choses qu’ils ne comprennent peut-être pas tout de suite, mais qu’ils sentent. Je n’aime pas l’idée de cacher des choses aux enfants. Il faut leur faire confiance, les initier à la poésie, les sensibiliser aussi à la réalité qui n’est pas toujours facile à accepter.

Children’s books are a whole world unto themselves.  It is an enormous privilege to speak to such little human beings, and an enormous responsibility.  Children don’t see the world as we do: they define it, invent it, transcend it.  I believe, too that we can say many, many more things to children than we do – things they may not understand right away, but that they can feel.  I don’t like the idea of hiding things from them.  We need to have confidence in them , introduce them to poetry, make them aware of a reality, which is not always an easy thing to accept.
